EMANES publishes one of the papers which won the EMNES AC 2021 best paper award

The EU-Mediterranean and African Network for Economic Studies (EMANES, formerly EMNES) published the EMANES working paper 56: “The role of cooperatives in enhancing social and economic inclusion: determinants of turnover growth and survival under COVID-19”, co-authored by Najat El Mekkaoui (Université Paris- Dauphine PSL, LEDa DIAL IRD, Paris, France, EMANES and ERF) and Sara Loukili (Université Paris-Dauphine PSL, LEDa DIAL IRD, EMANES, Morocco).

The paper highlights that the social and solidarity economy, through cooperative structures, has been promoted for its potential to reduce poverty, enhance economic inclusion and provide alternative solutions to labour market issues in developing countries. Nevertheless, very few empirical evaluations of their impact exist. The authors build an original qualitative and quantitative survey on the population of cooperatives in different sectors in Morocco and estimate the determining factors of their turnover growth, accounting for sample selection bias, as well as their survival rate.

The paper was one of the 3 papers which won the best paper award at EMNES Annual Conference 2021.

The EMNES Annual Conference 2021: “Pillars for Inclusive, Sustainable and Resilient Growth and Innovative Socio-Economic Models Post COVID-19 Pandemic in the Mediterranean and Africa” took place online on Zoom, on 09 and 10 December 2021 and offered to leading academics, practitioners and policymakers the opportunity to discuss innovative research on a range of topics related to the post- COVID-19 pandemic recovery.

The awarded papers received 2,000 Euros of research budget in order to continue their research. The award is funded by the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association – EMEA.
