EMEA Webinar | Bank Business Models and Systemic Risk: Rethinking Regulation in an Era of Polycrisis

The webinar, “Bank Business Models and Systemic Risk: Rethinking Regulation in an Era of Polycrisis”, will bring together leading voices from academia, financial regulation, and public policy to explore how bank business models shape systemic risk in an increasingly volatile global environment.

Organised by the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association (EMEA) in cooperation with Bayes Business School, the event will take place on Wednesday, 30 April 2025, from 13:00 to 14:30 CET on Zoom.

As the financial system is increasingly exposed to overlapping political, economic, environmental, and technological disruptions, the limitations of traditional regulatory frameworks have become more apparent. While capital adequacy and liquidity remain central to macroprudential oversight, new research—such as recent studies published in the Journal of Financial Stability—emphasises the critical role of bank business models in both absorbing and amplifying systemic shocks.

This webinar will address how supervisory practices and regulatory design can be adapted to account for diverse business models and their varying risk profiles. Particular attention will be given to the systemic implications of business model shifts driven by digital innovation and sustainability mandates. The session will also explore institutional needs—such as better data infrastructures and enhanced cooperation across central banks, regulators, and research institutions—to support a more differentiated and resilient approach to financial supervision.

Expected outcomes include a set of forward-looking policy recommendations, a roadmap for future research, and identification of tools that can support more dynamic macroprudential strategies.
