On the 14th July 2023, EMEA partnered with the European Programme Bertelsmann Stiftung co-organising the workshop “The EU’s Role in Paving the Way for the Green Energy Transition in the Mediterranean Region”. The Bertelsmann is an independent and non-profit think tank based in Germany. Its project “A Sovereign Europe” examines how the EU can preserve and strengthen its capacity to act by strategically managing its interdependencies – building on new partnerships with its neighbours in the East and South. The workshop was held in Recinte Modernista Sant Pau, UNESCO World Heritage Site, EMEA HQs.
The workshop invited experts in policy, finance, and energy from across the Mediterranean region and Europe to discuss innovative ways to finance the green energy transition. The workshop was opened with a welcome dinner and address from H.E Nasser Kamel, Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean on the 15th anniversary of the institution. The session was split into four parts covering the state of play of the EU-Mediterranean partnership, the available policy, technical and financial instruments to accelerate the energy transition in the region, lessons learned from the South, and finally, how to strengthen the EU-Mediterranean partnership using innovative financial instruments with Prof. Rym Ayadi acting as the session moderator. The workshop operated under the Chatham House Rule.
