EMEA Side-Event at COP29 – Accelerating the Green Transition: Balancing Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies

The green transition, a shift toward a sustainable and low-carbon economy, is essential for addressing the global climate crisis. As the impacts of climate change become more evident, nations and industries face the dual challenge of both mitigating future emissions and adapting to the unavoidable consequences of climate disruption. The balance between mitigation—efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions—and adaptation—measures that increase resilience to climate impacts—is critical in defining how societies can achieve sustainable development.

While mitigation focuses on long-term strategies such as reducing carbon emissions through renewable energy and energy efficiency, adaptation emphasizes immediate actions to protect communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems from climate impacts like extreme weather, sea-level rise, and shifting agricultural patterns. This event will explore how countries, businesses, and financial institutions can integrate both mitigation and adaptation approaches to create a balanced, comprehensive strategy for the green transition.

Key Discussion Points:

  • Mitigation versus Adaptation Trade-offs: How limited financial resources and policy priorities shape the allocation of investments between mitigation and adaptation efforts, especially in developing economies.
  • Financing the Green Transition: The role of green bonds, climate finance, and blended finance solutions in supporting both mitigation projects and adaptation initiatives.
  • Policy and Regulatory Frameworks: How governments can create integrated policies that incentivize both mitigation and adaptation, with a focus on carbon pricing, regulatory incentives, and climate resilience planning.
